Program Description

PROGRAM BASICS

Our teachers and artists provide music education, computer composition services, and outreach performances  primarily targeting inner-city Philadelphia youth.  We reach over 1,000 people each year through a growing base of satellite locations in recreation centers and partner facilities.  We also provide advanced composition training using cutting edge computer equipment at our center city Philadelphia studio.  The program provides exposure and opportunities for advancement in the arts as well as career opportunities for program graduates who wish to open new satellite locations.

OUR EDUCATION PARTNERS

Current partners include Youth Empowerment Services (satellite location), Wharton Square Recreation Center (satellite location), The Henry School (residency location), WHYY (program collaborator),  Orchestra 2001 (provides artists), The School District of Philadelphia (supports residency funding applications), and Musicians On Call and Child Life (outreach partners).

HOW WE MEASURE SUCCESS

Program success is measured via the success of student participants.  Several have been featured in local press and media coverage and have had their works premiered by Curtis-trained professional musicians.  In a city where the average high school graduation rate is barely over 50%, our long-term program participants have to date maintained a 100% graduation rate.  To date, two program graduates have "completed the circle" and been hired as teachers managing new satellite locations where they pass their computer composition training on to their younger peers.
